Murals in Motown El Corazón del Valle
BY ALEX CANTATORE
The sun, the arch, and agriculture. Three elements that define Modesto – and dominate the city’s newest mural.
The mural, “Corazón del Valle,” was unveiled on March 31. It’s the newest work to be organized by Murals in Motown, a local nonprofit that brings art to Modesto’s streets.
The mural overlays elements like Modesto’s iconic arch, fresh peaches, children playing, and a sun-strewn pastoral landscape. It occupies prime real estate on Downtown Modesto’s main drag, on the side of Dewz Restaurant, at the intersection of J and 15th streets.
The mural was painted by Francisco Franco, an Empire native and Modesto Junior College graduate who now works as an artist in San Francisco. He was assisted by Suaro Cervantes, a noted San Francisco muralist.
