Keep On Striding
By Anne Marie Bergthold
If you’re a senior looking for an excuse to start walking, mark your calendar for Sept. 11.
This year marks the twenty-fourth consecutive Senior Stride Fun Walk, a festive, healthy, educational event organized by the Modesto Rotary Club.
Janine McClanahan, Modesto Rotary Club Secretary and Former President, attributes the enduring popularity of this annual event to seniors simply enjoying the walk, and encouraging their friends to sign up. She says that the Senior Stride is a chance to “mingle with friends and meet new friends.”
“This last year we had over 300 [participants],” McClanahan said, a testament to the event’s popularity.
McClanahan also encourages seniors to participate so they can learn about available services. A variety of vendors and organizations that provide senior services, including independent and assisted living facilities, insurance and financial services, community hospice, and local hospitals, will attend the event.
Registration is $1 in advance and $3 on the day of the event. Seniors can walk either a 1.5-mile course or a 3-mile course. Participants can stride, stroll or power-walk, going at their own pace as there are no time restrictions. The first 300 registered walkers will receive a complimentary t-shirt and tote bag. After the walk, participants can enjoy a continental breakfast and there will be prize drawings.
True to the Rotary’s commitment to service, any proceeds will be donated back to local senior services.
The Senior Stride Fun Walk will be held Sept. 11 at East La Loma Park, Modesto. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m., and walks begin at 9:00 a.m.
