Hidden Talents: Tawn Gillihan

PEOPLE NORMALLY KNOW ME AS…

the IT Analyst that promotes accessibility on campus. I do a lot of training and education about the Accessible Technology Initiative to remove barriers to success caused by inaccessible technology.

BUT WHAT THEY DON’T KNOW IS THAT I…

that I’m a Steampunk fan. Steampunk is a mashup of science fiction and Victorian era technology. For example, what would the world be like if we had never moved away from steam-powered technology?

I GOT STARTED WITH MY HIDDEN TALENT WHEN…

I became friends with a co-worker in the campus IT department. They invited me along to a Steampunk convention in Sacramento and I’ve been a fan ever since.

AND SOMEDAY I HOPE TO…

be part of local Steampunk group that hosts events for the community. I also want to write the backstories of my characters into short stories that follow a shared narrative. Finding time to do all of this will be a challenge, but those are my goals.

THE LAST BOOK I READ WAS…

“Fire Shut Up in My Bones” by Charles M. Blow, and “The Red Garden” by Alice Hoffman.

I ALSO ENJOY…

being out in my community for fundraising and nonprofit events. Turlock is a wonderful place to live and work and I feel very fortunate to work at Stanislaus State.

GET STARTED BY…

Cosplaying is an opportunity to step outside your usual life and explore a different aspect of oneself. It’s an exercise in creativity, imagination, and performance. For me, it’s an exploration of my own creativity and a way to connect with people in a very positive way.
