Hidden Talents: Suzy Powell

People normally know me as a… Three-time Olympic athlete in discus.

But what they don’t know is that I am a… Since 2006, my husband Tim and I have made our own olive oil every year from local olives.

I got started with my hidden talent when… Tim started talking to different farmers who have small groves of olive trees. Each year we recruit a bunch of friends and family to pick them then send them to Sciabica’s, where they custom press the olives for us. We have them bottled and then give them out as gifts.

And someday I hope to… Just find a way to share myself and my experience to help others. I’m retired from Olympic competitions, but helping others is something that’s really important to me.

The last book I read was… The last book I completed that I really enjoyed was Unbroken. It’s the story of Louis Zamperini. It’s an inspiring story and I couldn’t put the book down.

People can get my olive oil by… We only make about 40 or 50 gallons each year, but if you want to know more about our olive oil products, send me an email.

I also enjoy… I also run a small fitness boot camp in the mornings in local parks. My average client is around their early 50’s and looking to start exercising to fit in their pants better. My clients usually understand the value of exercise in how they feel, how they look and how they perform in their jobs, and I offer a thoughtful approach to getting in shape that’s not about fitness fads.

Want to get started in… Just start by… If you’re looking to get in shape, shop around and ask around. I’d start with one of these smaller studios that offers group training. Then you’re also supporting a local small business. There are several to choose from in the area, including Modesto Power.
