Hidden Talents: David Sahl

PEOPLE NORMALLY KNOW ME AS…
A Principal in the Technology firm ITSolutions Currie.

BUT WHAT THEY DON’T KNOW IS THAT I…
Have been an avid hang glider for more than 25 years.

I GOT STARTED WITH MY HIDDEN TALENT WHEN…
An acquaintance of mine who was a hang glider pilot told me he thought this was something I’d be interested in. I went up one Saturday and took a look. I had the notion that you hooked in and went off a cliff and landed. But when they took off and went up it kind of blew my mind. I started taking some lessons and continued to progress and been at it ever since.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE SEE YOU FLY?
The most common flying site I visit is just below Coulterville on Highway 32. There’s a recreation area called Horseshoe Bend Recreation Area. There are people flying almost all the time out there. That’s a great way to see hang gliding up close.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO DO IN THE FUTURE?
I’ve been fortunate enough to fly all over the world. Hawaii, Canada, almost all of the Western United States. I made a trip to Australia with the US World Team back in 1993. There aren’t too many locations left that are burning for me. But one goal is to break the hundred mile barrier for a distance flight. I just accomplished one goal a couple weeks back: I now have over 1000 hours in the air.

WHAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT HANG GLIDING IS THAT…
It’s safe! In the early days of hang gliding, the equipment wasn’t advanced at all. We get much better performance now and it’s much safer. The thought used to be that hang gliding was extremely dangerous and only for crazy people, but due to the specific approach to teaching hang gliding, the vast improvements in equipment and flying with parachutes, it’s not nearly as dangerous as it used to be.

WANT TO GET STARTED WITH HANG GLIDING? JUST START BY…
Coming by to take a look so you can see what it takes. Then go slow and get proper instruction. There are certified instructors in this area who can train you. The primary focus is on safety, learning how to ground handle a glider and learning how to launch it and land it successfully.
