Hidden Talents: Brad De La Cruz

Brad de la Cruz-4
PEOPLE NORMALLY KNOW ME AS…
The Regional Major Gifts Officer for Sutter Health at Memorial Hospital Foundation.

BUT WHAT THEY DON’T KNOW IS THAT I…
Am a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) under legendary Judo and BJJ black belt Dave Camarillo.

I GOT STARTED WITH MY HIDDEN TALENT WHEN…
I was in grad school 15 years ago at Ralph Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Mountain View, CA. At the time, I was looking for a physical activity at night that was challenging and wouldn’t interfere with studying. I’ve watched Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in the past and was fascinated by BJJ. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. It’s one of the most effective martial arts in the world today and can be enjoyed by anyone. When I heard there was a BJJ school in the area, I immediately enrolled. I’ve been training ever since.

AND SOMEDAY I HOPE TO…
Travel to Brazil and train at several BJJ academies. Although San Diego is now growing to be home of many top BJJ academies and competitors, Brazil is the heart of the sport. I’d like to experience the older academies and gain a deeper understanding of the martial art.

THE LAST BOOK I READ WAS…
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It’s a fantastic historical thriller. If you enjoyed Bram Stoker’s Dracula, you’ll like this book.

PEOPLE CAN SEE MY WORK AT…
Ultimate Athlete Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Roseburg Square, Modesto.

I ALSO ENJOY…
Playing racquetball. I hate running and racquetball is a great sport to build cardio.

GET STARTED BY….
Stopping by Ultimate Athlete Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Kids’ classes are 5-6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and adult classes are from 6-7:30 p.m. M-F. The academy has excellent instructors and the environment is friendly and welcoming to students of all ages and abilities.
