Experience Modesto’s Downtown Art Walk
By Jacqui D. Sinarle
It’s entertaining, it’s fun, and it’s free!
The Downtown Modesto Art Walk is a great way to soak up some local culture, and now it’s even better than ever.
“The Art Walk has always been a family-friendly destination, but it also makes a great date night, ladies’ night, or guys’ night out,” said Jennifer Price, gallery manager of The Chartreuse Muse Gallery and Art Walk committee member.
Now in its 13th year, the art walk is a self-guided tour that showcases a diverse range of local artwork on the third thursday of each month from 5 to 9 p.m. upcoming summer 2016 dates are jul. 21 and aug. 18.
There’s always something new at the year-round event, which features art galleries, businesses, and organizations that display art for the evening. It also offers opportunities to meet local artists, view and purchase artwork, and experience the diversity of local art galleries and shops.
Participating venues in the spring and summer 2016 Art Walk include Barkin’ Dog Grill, Carolyn Huff Photography, The Chartreuse Muse Gallery and Art School, Che’root Cigar Lounge, Downtown Tinkertank, Intrinsic Elements, Mistlin Gallery-Central California Art Association, Peer Recovery Art Project, Preservation Coffee and Tea, and Still Smoking. Live music at various locations is coordinated by Breaking Stuff Records.
“The Art Walk gives up-and-coming artists the ability to easily display their artwork and exposes the public to the arts and amenities that downtown Modesto has to offer,” said Price. “We have many talented and accomplished artists, musicians, poets, and performers in our community, and Art Walk is a wonderful opportunity to experience some of Modesto’s unique cultural amenities.”
So, what could make it even better?
“Recently the Art Walk started using a ‘passport’ system,” Price continued. “Patrons can pick up their free passports at any participating venue and if they get every location on their passports stamped, they can enter to win dinner and a movie for two!” In April, the lucky winner enjoyed dinner at Tressetti’s World Café and tickets to Brendan Theatre.
The Art Walk is supported by gold sponsors including Artist Open Studio, Brenden Theatres Modesto 18, Dittos, Gallo Center for the Arts, MHD Group, Martino Graphic Design Inc., Modesto Certified Farmers’ Market, Modesto View, Peer Recovery Art Project, and The State Theatre. Silver sponsors are Concetta Restaurant, Downtown Improvement District, Visit Modesto, and Tresetti’s World Caffe.
Currently the Art Walk committee is focused on increasing the numbers of participating business venues as well as patrons.
“The Downtown Improvement District recently stepped in to help, and the new Downtown Partnership program, headed by Josh Bridegroom, will take an active role in keeping the Art Walk thriving after the spring/summer season and going forward,” Price added.
