Climbing Legends Honored at Valley Uprising

NBDA ARCHIVE (78 of 180)BY JUSTIN SOUZA

There are a select few names that are recognized by nearly everyone who lives in Stanislaus County. They are the success stories, the creators and larger-than-life legends who have called the greater Modesto area home through the years. Names like George Lucas, Jeremy Renner, and Royal Robbins.

On October 24, at a sold-out show at the State Theatre in Modesto, one of those names got some of the recognition he deserves. That was the night of a sold-out screening of Valley Uprising, a feature-length documentary about the climbing culture that grew up in Yosemite National Park and the outsized figures—like Royal Robbins—who followed their passion to some of the world’s most incredible accomplishments.

The evening, hosted by Camp 4 Wine Café with an introduction by Royal’s son Damon Robbins, was capped off with a meet and greet and signing by Royal and other awe-inspiring rock climbers who scaled Yosemite’s great peaks and found themselves at the peak of stardom.
