Almond Joy to the World

By Noel Daniel

The holidays are here and with them come the most indulgent dishes of the year. Plates of peanut brittle, toffee with nuts, peanut butter cookies and so much more. In fact, nuts are a huge hit around the holidays.

But do you recall—one of the healthiest nuts of all?

We’re talking about almonds of course, and Stewart and Jasper Orchards were happy to give us some almond knowledge that you’ll be sure to add to your holiday traditions.

“Almonds contain many nutrients such as protein, fiber and the antioxidant vitamin E,” said Stewart and Jasper. “They are Gluten Free, a low glycemic index food, and can help curb cravings and improve certain risk factors for major diseases.”

With how good almonds are for you, it seems almost silly not to incorporate more almonds into your holiday diet. But how do you do it? Let’s start with those deliciously pesky peanut butter cookies.

“Almond Butter is a slightly better source of heart-healthy fats, such as monounsaturated fat,” said Stewart and Jasper. “These fats help lower blood cholesterol levels, anåd may also reduce your risk of heart disease or stroke. Almond Butter is also a better source of fiber and vitamin E.”

Just take one cup of Honey Almond Butter from Stewart and Jasper, six tablespoons of raw sugar, and one lightly beaten, large egg. Preheat the oven to 350°F, place the racks in the upper and lower third of the oven, and spray two nonstick baking sheets lightly with cooking spray. After mixing your ingredients together, just grab a fork and shape accordingly, popping them in the oven for ten minutes.

If you’re looking for something even healthier, however, there are several ways to incorporate more almonds into your diet. For example, Stewart and Jasper recommends sprinkling some on oatmeal, yogurt, or even salad; adding almond butter to smoothies or using it on toast; using almond flour for baked goods; and curbing sweet cravings by munching on dark chocolate almonds.

Are you craving a crunchy, nutty treat? We know we are! Pick up some delectable local almonds from Stewart and Jasper Orchards for the optimal almond experience.
