A County of Positivity

By Jacqui D. Sinarle

If you think no news is good news, then you’d better think again.

The local residents who operate Positive Modesto News and HeyTurlock are determined to change your mind by providing feel-good stories, user friendly event calendars and interesting information that celebrates what’s good about our communities.

Positive Modesto News

Positive Modesto News (www.facebook.com/PositiveModestoNews) was founded in 2014 and shares positive news compiled from Modesto area newspapers, magazines, and blogs.

“Positive #ModestoNews sheds light on the good stuff going on all around us in this city we love,” explained editor Maryann Spikes. “We may define ‘positive’ differently than you do. We do not claim to be objective and unbiased, but we genuinely only want to shed light on the positive.”

The Positive Modesto News Facebook page includes posts on news and photos. It also has links to the Positive Modesto News Twitter account and a Paper.li web newspaper that’s organized so users can browse news under the categories of headlines, photos, videos, good neighboring, art and entertainment, education, living, innovation, and sports and recreation.

The web newspaper includes a Facebook list and a Twitter list (when viewed from a computer, negative news is not filtered on these lists). It also features links to positive news in Stockton and Merced.

If you can’t find a Positive Modesto News source or story in the web newspaper, on Twitter, or on Facebook, you can tag Positive Modesto News in a public update/tweet or post as a visitor on the Facebook page.

And if you’re interested in a regular supply of positive news, you can subscribe to the Positive Modesto News email newsletter.

HeyTurlock

HeyTurlock (www.heyturlock.com) features a blog, a calendar of area events and a local business directory. It also allows users to submit their own events and join the business directory.

“We aim to be a positive communications partner in the greater Turlock, California area,” noted Hilary Callis and Alison Cox, self-described longtime Turlockians and active community go-ers who founded the web-based platform in 2016.

“Our number one goal is to provide amazing online technology geared towards helping us learn about all the fantastic events taking place in and around Turlock,” they added. “We’re committed to sharing the love and supporting the happenings and hotspots in our community, including event venues, restaurants, schools, galleries, ballparks, and more.”

HeyTurlock’s blog features the region’s latest news and inspiration, and the website’s local event calendar is a convenience place where visitors can fi nd, upload and share upcoming events located within the limits of Turlock, Denair, Hughson, Hilmar, and Stevinson.

Submitting events on the HeyTurlock calendar is free. Local events can be included in the HeyTurlock social media posts for a fee of $20.

The website also boasts the only online business directory in Turlock, which helps visitors to find their favorite local event venues, small businesses and nonprofits, and learn about new ones (users can search businesses by category or browse them all).

When you visit the HeyTurlock website you can also sign up to receive a monthly newsletter that features local events.
